VHS Tapes

This past Saturday the weather was cold and foreboding. I could have gone outside to do the yard but I just didn't want to. I had just finished a whirlwind of video editing for a church in town and was in need of some relaxation. The kids decided to clean out a cabinet that had a bunch of old VHS tapes in it. They were going to go upstairs to our entertainment room to watch one of the tapes but neither of them knew how to get the system to show a VHS tape. (Tivo... sure. DVD... yeah. HD cable... why not) The only option was to watch it on the old TV that had a VCR directly hooked to it. So, here is the funny thing; neither of them really remembered how to run that rig either. Pretty funny, the youngest said; "Oh, I don't know how to use this technology". In the end, they chose to watch The Iron Giant. I forgot about that movie. It was one of our oldest's favorites when he was 4 years old. What a great movie. Such inventiveness. What a great story. I sat there for the next hour and 28 minutes and was impressed by an old fashioned, non-computer (well, maybe a bit) enhanced cartoon. Saturday was good.

That's a great time, dude.

James and I are heavily into Lego Star Wars right now. The payoff came this week when he asked if I could set up one of the real movies so he could watch it in the morning before Mommy gets up.

Yes, son. Yes, you can.

We have such fond memories of both the book and movie. We discovered the book while at Balboa when the boys were probably 4ish and read it repeatedly while we where there. We didn't find it on video for at least another year every time I see it I think of those sweet days of reading it at the beach. The book is probably still full of sand.
