Mother-Son Dance

Last Friday night, the oldest and I went on a date to the Mother-Son Dance at his school. Before the dance, we had teppan-yaki with his friend and his friend's mother. We had a great time. This year the oldest actually danced with me instead of ditching me to hang out with his buddies.

Science Fair

Hard work pays off!

Tonight was the final judging for the science fair. The oldest worked really hard on his project and that hard work paid off. He won the highest award given at the individual school level; best of category for Social and Psychological Science. If he were a 6th grader, he would be off to the county science fair but since he is in 5th grade, he is done for this year. Good job my oldest.

New Cell Phone Law

So, word around the campfire is that this July there is going to be a law that you can't use your cell phone while driving unless you are hands free. Well, IT'S ABOUT TIME!. Just yesterday Mrs. Weave and I were driving around doing errands. In the hour we were out three different drivers pulled out right in front of us and guess what, all three were holding a cell phone up to their head. It's about time that our legislators passed a law that made sense.

Snow Day

We went to the snow with our good friends the Cameron's. Here is the video of our fun.

Science Project

The oldest decided to do the science fair this year for the first time. Since his dad is a high school science teacher, he knew going in that it was going to have to be good. We talked about several different projects but in the end he settled on subliminal messaging. Well, he just finished today; three weeks before the due date. We had to push him along a bit but in the end he did a great job. He made two movies. One with a subliminal message, (an apple) and one without. He then showed the movie to 681 subjects. (The sheer number alone should be good for a win.) In the end, his results matched the research; subliminal messaging really does not make much of a difference. (It only made a difference of 4% in this experiment) Check out his movie.

VHS Tapes

This past Saturday the weather was cold and foreboding. I could have gone outside to do the yard but I just didn't want to. I had just finished a whirlwind of video editing for a church in town and was in need of some relaxation. The kids decided to clean out a cabinet that had a bunch of old VHS tapes in it. They were going to go upstairs to our entertainment room to watch one of the tapes but neither of them knew how to get the system to show a VHS tape. (Tivo... sure. DVD... yeah. HD cable... why not) The only option was to watch it on the old TV that had a VCR directly hooked to it. So, here is the funny thing; neither of them really remembered how to run that rig either. Pretty funny, the youngest said; "Oh, I don't know how to use this technology". In the end, they chose to watch The Iron Giant. I forgot about that movie. It was one of our oldest's favorites when he was 4 years old. What a great movie. Such inventiveness. What a great story. I sat there for the next hour and 28 minutes and was impressed by an old fashioned, non-computer (well, maybe a bit) enhanced cartoon. Saturday was good.

Must Read Book - The Shack

This week I started a new Sunday School class which had a reading and homework assignment, I started another college class which had a reading and homework assignment, my small group started another Bible study which had a reading and homework assignment and I started a new Thursday morning Bible study which had a reading and homework assignment. I also started and finished the book The Shack during this week. I only tell you all of this so that you can understand just how good the book is. I have never read a book like this and only hope to find another one this good to read. It is a wonderful story about a man and God meeting each other at The Shack. From the moment I started the book, I was drawn in and had a very hard time putting it down to do my other homework. If Christmas hadn't just passed, it would have been in everyone's stocking. If you have read it, let me know because I can't wait to talk to someone about it. Here is the website address if you are interested in learning more about the book http://www.theshackbook.com/

Just for fun

Okay, a friend of mine sent me this. Before you look at this, keep in mind; this is just for entertainment value. I do not support violence toward any children in any way. This is kind of like a car wreck; you don't want to see it but you have to watch. As many of you know, I am a teacher and it would not be copacetic to my continued employment if i went around beating down 5 year olds. Enjoy, but again... please remember this is only for entertainment purposes.
